The number of allergic problems is increasing all over the world. A lot of people call it the plague of the XXI century. Allergy is an exaggerated reaction of our immune system to substances which normally do not provoke any reaction. This kind of substances is called allergen for example pollens, hair of animals, mites, spores of mildew, venom of animals, microorganisms, food, medicines, and chemicals.

There are various symptoms depending on the organ where the reaction takes place.

  • if allergen gets into lower airways it cause symptoms of asthma: shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing
  • allergen food cause problems to our digestive tract, for example abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating and loose bowel movement
  • allergic reaction could take place on the skin. its typical forms are eczema and urticarial
  • allergens which spread by air (pollen, mite) cause inflammation of the airways and the eye in most cases. Hay fever is disease of the membrane mucous in the nose its symptoms are nasal discharge, sneezing, nasal congestion and sometimes even loss of smelling
  • in serious cases the reaction is not local but spread in the whole body causing anaphylaxis which is life-threatening

Finding the allergen is very important of curing the patient. There is some way to identify the allergen. The most often used are provocation test (skin allergy test) and blood test. In the first method small amount of allergen or extraction of the allergen gets in the upper layers of the skin. If the patient is sensitive to this allergen there will be local reaction in certain time. This kind of examination gives us results which are evaluable immediately; it can be done when the patient does not take any anti-allergic medicine. When the allergens are found we can give some useful advices of lifestyle. The other way is the blood test which is mainly used when the skin test is not feasible. Its reasons can be that the patient is too young, taking certain medicines or having serious allergic reaction before. The amount of allergen-specific IgE is measured in the blood; you can get the results in two weeks.
