Cardiology

Cardiovascular diseases are the leader cause of death in Hungary and also in the whole world. Men from 30 to 50 years old and women around and after menopause are the most afflicted by these problems. Many things can lead to it or worsen it such as smoking, stress, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension. Another important factor is the inherited predisposition which cannot be influenced by medicine.

The development of the disease is long. Its latency can last years before any symptom shows up. In case of early state of the illness the development can be stopped by medication and changing lifestyle, but later irreversible alterations develop. That is why regular cardiac testing is so important.

Cardiology focuses on the diseases of the heart and veins.

The patients can have typical and atypical symptoms (fatigue, anorexia, lack of appetite). The two main symptoms are pain in the chest (angina pectoris) and shortness of breath (dyspnoea). Also frequent symptoms are temporary loss of consciousness (syncope cardialis) because of the disturbance of cerebral blood flow and feeling your own heartbeat (palpitation). All symptoms related to circulation problems (limb numbness, cerebral blood flow disturbance, blurred vision, erectile dysfunction etc.) are important because general damage of the vascular system later reaches and damages the coronary circulation.

The task of the cardiologist beside examine the patient and analyse the results is telling the patient about the risk factors and give lifestyle advices to decrease them. Cooperation with other areas (neurology, angiology, internal medicine) is also important.

You should see a cardiologist if:

  • you have fluctuating blood pressure

ECG: it can record the electric stimulus caused by the heart in a calm state.
Exercise ECG: it can record the electric stimulus caused by the heart during the patient does exercise.
Holter-monitoring: recording the electric stimulus during the whole day. It is a light ECG machine which you wear on your hip for 24 hours.

Treatment of the predisposing factors of cardiovascular diseases:

  • Support the patient with stop smoking.
  • Healthy diet – treatment of obesity, help in losing weight. It helps decreasing the level of blood pressure, sugar and lipid in the blood and also the risk of thrombosis. From the muscle mass and fat mass we can calculate the appropriate amount of calories you need for basic metabolism so we can define a beneficial diet for you.
  • Increasing the amount of physical exercise. It is recommended to take exercises 4-5 times a week for 30-40 minutes when the patient reach the 60-70% of the maximum heart rate to prevent cardiovascular diseases.
  • Treatment of hypertension
  • Treatment of abnormal level of cholesterol and triglycerides.
